Counselling and Spiritual Direction:
The integration and separation of these two practices continues to generate much discussion within therapeutic and spiritual direction communities. In my opinion, psychological training and spiritual direction training inform each other. This allows the material and experiences a person brings to their therapeutic work and spiritual journey to be responsibly tended.
Generally, counselling involves weekly or bi-weekly sessions and it follows a process of assessment, objectives and on-going evaluation. The spiritual component of a client’s experience in therapeutic work is determined by them, and then is integrated in a way that serves their healing and growth. For counselling, I work with clients on-line and in-person at my Calgary, Alberta practice.
Spiritual Direction involves monthly or twice-monthly sessions. The core focus is on the client’s spiritual questions and path that they determine for themselves. I believe psychological knowledge and understanding of significant experiences/issues can be useful when a client is exploring spiritual questions. Some conversations may be therapeutic, however there is not a specific counselling plan. As a spiritual director, my role is to simply ‘hold space’ and support the person to find their own way. For spiritual direction, I work with clients on-line and in-person.
I will discuss session rates at the time of initial contact.
